Chaperone has assembled a core staff, supplemented by an experienced team of technical and business advisors, to address the critical success factors of the company: research and development, strategic partnering, technology licensing, and operations.

Kenneth E. Kovan, CEO & President has more than 18 years of pharmaceutical commercial development experience with industry leaders such as SmithKline Beecham, Thomas Jefferson University, and Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals. He was instrumental in founding Avax Technologies, Inc., a publicly traded oncology therapeutics company, as well as other companies in the life sciences field. He directed the technology transfer activity of Thomas Jefferson University, managing its patent portfolio and negotiating a variety of technology licenses, and has launched several international pharmaceutical products and managed a >$1BB global pharma brand. As a global healthcare consultant, his practice covered the biotechnology sector, focusing on providing corporate development support including technology acquisitions and divestitures, marketing and brand management, and other strategic partnering activities. Mr. Kovan’s practical business knowledge, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry understanding, and expertise in strategic partnering and technology licensing provide the necessary skills to ensure Chaperone succeeds.

Michael Sturgess, PhD, Director of Chemistry directs the medicinal chemistry efforts of Chaperone’s proprietary drug lead programs. He comes to Chaperone from Message Pharmaceuticals, where he led their Chemistry Group, having managed a team of six scientists engaged in projects including antimicrobial lead development. He has extensive commercial experience directing therapeutic lead discovery efforts and small molecule synthesis, as well as establishing and maintaining pharmacology, structural biology, and chemistry-orientated programs. Dr. Sturgess received his Ph.D from Northwestern University.

Camillo J. DiFrancesco, CPA has over 30 years experience in deal structuring, new company start-up and IPO management, organizational & financial restructuring, strategic planning, investor relations, and venture capital financing. Cam has held a range of senior financial management and corporate officer positions for both private and public companies

Porter W. Anderson, Ph.D. A graduate of Harvard University, Dr Anderson is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Pediatrics and Microbiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. Dr. Anderson is a recipient of the prestigious Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award and the Pasteur Award of the Children’s Vaccine Initiative. Dr. Anderson is a Trustee of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, and the Anderson-Rogers Foundation Inc.

David Johnson, Ph.D. Dr. Johnson is Associate Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases, Chief of the Infectious Disease Research Laboratory, and Executive Director of the Baltimore Research and Education Foundation, VA Maryland Health Car System / University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Johnson has been Principal Investigator on nearly thirty sponsored infectious disease research projects, has nearly one hundred publications to his credit, and is an internationally recognized expert on urinary tract infection and other infectious diseases, having authored book chapters on animal models of urinary tract infections.

Ned. D. Heindel, PhD. Dr. Heindel is The H.S. Bunn Chair Professor of Chemistry at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA., and is the former Chairman and current member of the Editorial Board of Chemical & Engineering News. He also served on the Editorial Boards of Bioconjugate Chemistry and the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Chemical Sciences Roundtable, and has consulted for such successful life sciences and global industrial companies as J&J, Merck, OraSure, Serenix Pharmaceuticals, and Air Products and Chemicals. Dr. Heindel has over 275 publications to his credit, multiple licensed pharmaceuticals patents, and current research interests in several areas of medicinal chemistry including antimicrobial therapeutics.

James Poupard, PhD Dr. Poupard is President of The Pharma Institute of Philadelphia, a consortium of specialists that focus on antiinfective drug development. He is the former Director of Clinical Microbiology at Thomas Jefferson University, and most recently lead GlaxoSmithKline’s antinfective drug discovery & screening group. Dr. Poupard consults extensively with the Department of Defense on biowarfare defense issues, and is a recognized expert in in vitro testing and factors determining antmicrobial breakpoints.

Peter C. Appelbaum, MD, PhD Dr. Appelbaum received his M.D. in 1968, and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Pretoria Medical School (cum laude) in 1974. He presently is the Professor of Pathology and Director of Clinical Microbiology, at The Pennsylvania State University, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Dr. Appelbaum has authored and co-authored over 300 articles and presented over 400 papers on topics concerning bacterial resistance, clinical management of respiratory tract infections, the methodology of identifying gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, role of anaerobes in clinical/in vitro infections and has peer reviewed many articles on the activity of antimicrobial agents against various bacteria. He has been involved in the study of antimicrobial resistance for three decades. Dr. Appelbaum was the first to describe a clinical outbreak of infections due to drug-resistant pneumococci in South Africa in 1977, and in 2002 described the second strain of VRSA found in the United States.
